Are tickets still available? I really wanted to see the Unicorns as well -- they're playing at Middle East. Perhaps I could wing something and see them both. I think they'd put on a dynamite live show.
I'm going to make you that jazz mix -- probably 3 cds, all modern stuff. but I think there's some great musicians out there but they're just so underground/unknown: Ellery Eskelin, Jim Black, Chris Speed, Matthew Shipp, William Parker, Susie Ibarra, Tim Berne, Craig Taborn, Dave Douglas, Mark Dresser, Larry Goldings, Ben Allison, Myra Melford, Cuong Vu, Ikue Mori, Andrea Parkins, Scot Ray, Gregg Bendian, Mat Maneri and so on. They're all pretty young (well, less then 40) and pretty modern. Craig Taborn is releasing an album on April 20th that I have to say is the most anticipated new release, jazzwise, of 2004. He was a straight piano player early in his career but later started mixing in a lot of keyboards and now electronics and laptop computer stuff. His cd coming out should be a really hip fusion of totally live instrumentation & improvisation with laptop stuff. Anyway, you must have heard of John Zorn and Bill Frisell too -- they're both pretty cool.
See you at the Wrens maybe
