The Orange Line is called that because Washington St used to be called "Orange Way", and the Orange line was the Washington St El.

And another:

Early proposals for rapid transit between Cambridge and Boston involved the Meigs Monorail System. Far ahead of it's time, it looked like Pneumatic Transit meets a monorail. The cars were round cylinders, and it used both horizontal and vertical wheels to grip its one rail. A test track was built in Cambridge, but nobody felt like investing in it.

On a somewhat related note, I heard a rumor that some kid took an LRV for a joyride on the Riverside line back in the late '80s or early '90s. I heard it from someone who used to work for the T, but it was a while ago. Anyone know anything about that?
