Audrey couldn't help feel some amount of excitement as she sat down in the interview room. Her newest patient hadn't arrived yet - he was being brought down from his cell and would be there any minute. She flipped open his file while she waited.

Dr. Jonathan Crane. She'd never treated another doctor before. Of course, this was different. Crane ( Read more... )

Crane smiled at the guards as they paused in front of the door. "It's been a pleasure, gentlemen. I hope to continue our conversation later. Please think about what we've discussed."

"Shut up, freak!" said the younger of the two.

"Ignore him, Jeph. He wants you to react." The older man knocked on the door. "Delivery for you."

Audrey got up as they opened the door. "Thank you," she told the guards. She smiled at Crane. "Dr. Crane."

"In the too, too solid flesh." The guards pushed him firmly into a chair, locking his ankle chains to it. "Again, I'll protest that this violates my rights."

The older guard rolled his eyes and escorted his co-worker out.

Crane held up his manacled hands. "Is this really necessary? I find that these impede the trust process."

Audrey smiled. "That's up to the guards. If you're cooperative, I can speak to the warden so that the next time we meet, they're more lenient. How are you today, Dr. Crane?"

"Uncooperative. These chains chafe so. We'll never make any real progress while I'm so encumbered."

"This isn't a therapy session," Audrey said. "I'm here to determine if you're competent to stand trial."

"Ah," he grinned. "On that point, I believe we'll need to wait for my lawyer. Anyhow, you can't go by my opinion, now, can you?"

"Your lawyer is the one who requested the 730 exam," Audrey smirked. "I can go by your behavior and your answers to my questions. I certainly don't need to tell you how these proceedings work."

"I see. In that case, I'd have to ask you - what is "sane," really. Isn't it relative?"

"What is sanity to you?" Audrey asked.

"In a nutshell - irrelevant. I don't bother with the popular conceptions and misconceptions." He leaned forward, stopped by the chains. "I am both blessed with perceptions beyond the common man's, and master of my own mind. Your diagnosis would have to be both "yes" and "no." Besides - I was framed."

"And how do you...master your own mind?" Audrey wanted to know, taking notes as he spoke.

He gave a disapproving little tsk. "You should know that already. It means I don't suffer from delusions and hallucinations. Although I'd note that IF they occur, in my case, I wouldn't call it "suffering" and if one is aware of the altered reality, do you count that as a loss of control?"

Audrey took more notes, but didn't immediately answer. "You were brought in on a minor narcotics infraction. Were you aware that what you were doing was illegal?"

"The law," he hissed, "The law is an ass. Would you mind quoting me the statute that's being used against me? I was procuring supplies for my research. Any so-called laws are inapplicable, and as such, beneath my notice."

"Why don't you tell me about your research," Audrey suggested.
