I read the Grimm version of Cinderella,
Aschenputtel, and it turns out that there aren't any talking mice or fairy godmothers. Furthermore it seems that being an evil stepsister isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'd take the bed of ashes over what the mother asks of her own daughters any day.
Then of course after I drew this I realized she really only needed to cut off one toe since she only had one shoe. Somehow I feel better about this mistake realizing that she was apparently walking around wearing only one shoe (or mis-matched shoes) for a fairly long period of time (don't ask me why that makes it better). Ultimately though I think this just added insult to injury. True, she's still got the other big toe, but walking around in one shoe is awkward enough under ordinary circumstances. I wouldn't want to try it with a freshly amputated toe.
