I have struck up a very good (and growing) friendship with a colleague at work, who shares similar music taste to me... but he has an encyclopaedic knowledge of musc, a lot like himself really. Anyway, M and I are often chatting about things that no-on else quite understands, and it is quite good to have a shared interest with someone, in a workplace that can sometimes be so shallow and superficial.
Anyway, we have been sharing latest playlists and recommending things to each other, and we often say goodbye to each other with a "whatcha listening to on your way home tonight?" which is a good way to focus on what indeed I will be listening to on the journey home. Tonight I told him I had the new Decemberists album on, which is amazing, and he wants to check it out.
His parting words to me were, "It's Tom Waits for me tonight. Nothing better than Tom Waits for today".
So, on my way home I remembered my first ever Tom Waits song I heard. It is the most beautiful song. Given to me on a good old fashioned 'mix-tape' from himself when we first met, 15 years ago. I had to dig it out tonight and listen to it again. And WOW, I had forgotten what a beautiful song this is. Tom Waits can move me.
