It's not very often that I listen to an album that just blows me away on first listen, but those are the moments that I live for. Over the past four years or so I can thank the following for steering me towards albums of that nature.
facehead2k for Antony and the Johnsons and Tapes n Tapes, Coachella for Le Sac VS Pip, Ween forum for The Paper Chase, 91.7 for Hot Chip and now Spin Magazine for Ida Maria's debut Fortress Round My Heart. I almost didn't check this out because of how they described it. It was something to the effect of "Courtney Love minus the bullshit plus a bunch of charm". I really despise Courtney Love, but they gave it a 9 out of 10 so I figured what the hell. With an industry full of puppets and computerized over produced bullshit this album is extremely refreshing. On numerous spots throughout the album it sounds like she is about to have a breakdown, the vocals are far from perfect but great at the same time. You can hear the passion and emotion in her voice. It's raw. It's real. Give it a listen, but I warn you it's very addictive. And no it doesn't sound like Courtney Love.
