Not that anyone even comes here anymore, but I figure I'll make this post anyhow. I can always look back at it in the future and probably wonder what I was thinking. So I'm not going to go through the hassle of ranking anything here, but here's a list of bands that released albums this year that are at least worth a quick listen. I haven't had the chance to listen to everything I would have liked but I did get through a lot. I took the time to look through numerous "best of" lists that are around from decently reputable places. Acquired things that repeatedly made these said lists and listened away.
Artists that released albums this year that I didn't get from these lists but may have appeared on them:
Dan Le Sac vs Scroobious Pip - Angels (honestly this is the best hip hop album I've heard in years)
Hot Chip - Made In The Dark (made a lot of lists but it's the worst of their 3 albums I think. At least they are finally getting noticed)
Nick Cave - Dig Lazarus Dig (What can I really say about Nick Cave. If you're not on board already you probably never will be....and thats fine)
Portishead - Third (Ummmm.......I gave this album enough listens to know it's a solid album, but I should listen to it more)
Radiohead - In Rainbows (This may have been 07 but may have actually been Jan 1st I don't really remember very solid album anyhow)
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular (Decently solid album. Obvious Prince influence)
Art In Manilla - Set the Woods on Fire (I'm not exactly sure what it is but I really like Orenda Fink)
Tapes n Tapes - Walk It Off (not nearly as good as their last album but still pretty decent)
Conor Oberst - S/T (I get shit for liking this guy all the time so bring it on)
Ween - Cat's Cradle (Isn't it funny that the only good material this band releases anymore is older outtakes and older live stuff. It almost seems like they know that and that's why they do something like this once every year or so.)
Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell - Sunday at Devil Dirt (Didn't really think they could do it again, but they did)
Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil (this was probably 07 but whatever. This album is fucking excellent)
Tricky - Knowle West Boy ( I thought he was finished years ago. This album is a really nice bounce back for him. Very solid.)
The Scarring Party - Come Away From the Light (I love it. I wish I could get out to the shows more often)
Man Man - Rabbit Habbits ( If you haven't heard this band you really need. One of the top few of the year easily)
Ok these are albums that I got from being on numerous lists that I really enjoyed:
Tv on the Radio - Dear Science
Crystal Castles - S/T
Robots in Disguise - We're In The music Biz
Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing
Plenty of stuff I didn't get to
John Zorn, David Byrne + Brian Eno, Atmosphere, The Roots, Black Keys, Sun Kill Moon, Bon Iver, Grouper, Opeth, Rza, Beach House, Fleet Foxes, Q-tip.
Stuff that I just did not understand why anyone would even think about putting it on a "best of" list. Some from above may have made it to this list had I gotten to them and I'm sure people will think the same of some of the stuff on my list.
No Age, M83, Gym Class Heroes, Deerhunter
A positive outlook for 2009
Both Andrew Bird and Antony and the Johnsons albums are pretty good at first listen. I'm really looking forward to the supposedly two Paper Chase albums that are scheduled for early 09. Maybe another Outkast album but highly unlikely on that one.
