So, last night, I saw the 12:01 showing of Watchmen.
My thoughts on it, spoilers, etc
In short, it was entertaining. It kept my attention and didn't feel like it was dragging on. Probably not for the right reasons, though.
If anything, the movie wasn't long enough. The separated elements of the movie were beautifully and skillfully done for the most part, it's just their combination and execution was floundering, unsure, and distracting. The movie lost the art of the book, it's purposeful and conscious assemblage. It's as if someone put the novel in a blender and then picked out some of the bits that were still somewhat intact, just completely disconnected from their context, and then tried to put the book back together from those bits.
I also found the entire thing COMPLETELY FUCKING HILARIOUS. This is due to a combination of things. The music, for one. I can understand the choice to put less serious music over of serious scene, or vice versa, creating a dichotomy, etc, but the movie did overkill with it. When "Hallelujah" played over the sex scene in Archie, I just started dying of laughter. The song used over the funeral scene and on the way to Karnak are two others that stuck out as badly placed also. I liked the soundtrack when I saw the listing, but it seemed all jumbled in the actual film, all the songs used in the wrong places.
Also, the fight scenes and violence were completely ridiculous, and in most parts totally hilarious. Rorschach and Veidt are both suddenly able to jump 20 feet in the air with ease, blood everywhere, Rorschach chopping at the kidnapper's head like it's a pumpkin. Really, it got the point where it's just so out of place in the movie that I was just laughing. Some of the fight scenes were actually pretty beautiful looking, like the one between Veidt and Comedian in the beginning (despite it being a bit too long), but it just seemed really out of place, sticking out and looking ridiculous.
There are other things, but I am tired. THAT SHIT IS FUNNY, sums it up pretty well, though.
Pretty much, I've decided that the entire movie in itself is a joke, especially with the constant emphasis on LOL JOKE IT'S A PRACTICAL JOKE JOKE JOKE.
Snyder, you are a magnificent bastard and a master of post-modern humor.
I don't know, though. Especially after seeing all of these reviews of people who liked the book too, I just don't know. Did we see the same movie? I might just be jumping the gun with this. I'll probably go see it again to make sure and give it another chance.
