April Seventeenth
Nicole sighed as she walked into her quarters on SkyOne, tossing her keys onto their usual spot on the table by the door. She was satisfied to find everything exactly the way she had left it weeks ago before her unexpected medical leave. She hadn't realized she hadn't been in here since then until now. She still had a lot of catching up to do.
She sat down at her computer and turned it on, rubbing her eyes as she waited for it to boot up. The small calendar beside the computer monitor grabbed her attention. The date was incorrect. She reached out and flipped it over to the month of April, and her eyes were drawn to a bright purple mark on the seventeenth. Her birthday.
She sighed again as she pushed the calendar back to its place beside the monitor. She loved her birthday -- actually, she liked any reason to celebrate -- but it looked like her birthday this year was going to have to be ignored. Again.
No one around here really remembered her birthday, and KITT and Mike and the others had no idea, and she always felt weird reminding people about her own birthday. Maybe it was best anyway, she decided. She had a lot of work to catch up on, and she was committed to helping Zephyr, and now Brian Zane was practically breathing down her neck because of an eight-year-old grudge, and memories she had wanted to forget had been rehashed again...
She shook her head and reluctantly dragged her attention back to the computer screen. Maybe she was just too busy like last year... and the year before...
She briefly wondered why she didn't feel like her usual optimistic self.
