1) I don't know anyone with a sweety who only expresses their love on SVD. People in love go out and express their feelings in all kinds of ways and hearing about the creative things people do for their sweety is nice. SVD is a good day to be creative about your expression.
2) there are lots of people for whom outward displays of affection are difficult and scary. SVD gives them an opportunity and possibly some lessons on how to accomplish this in a magnanimous way under social sanction. For some people this is one of the few times they can "get it right"
3) children love SVD and participating in it nowadays is a classroom event thereby no longer a popularity contest that it used to be. Teaching children how to express feelings and allowing them to do so in a structured and simple way is a good thing.
4) there's lots of specials and sales during SVD which many of us poorer folk really appreciate.
