Let's see - last night's prime time ice hockey upset victory of team USA over Canada is on the front page of damned near every sports section and Olympic blog. And NBC's 'coverage' - was a very meager last 30 seconds of the game.
Contrast with the ice dancing short program (NOT the finals) - at least 1.5 hours worth on NBC at prime time. And yet, in the USA Today's Olympics section - *this* stuff is on page 4.
WTF?
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind watching most figure skating competitions. But somehow over the years this has become the 'gold standard' of the Winter Games, even though much of the scoring/points system is subjective and can be politically motivated.
The sports world has a much higher opinion of 'real' winter sports (Hockey, skiing, speed skating, sledding events, - etc) than for figure skating - and yet which events get the better coverage? (This can also be said of the Summer Games as well).
So NBC - why the second class treatment? Does the sports fan really give a crap about Johnny Weir's costumes or a Russian Ice dancing couple's fashion choices?
