End of the World Cometh!

Robert Frost speculated about the world ending in fire or in ice. Which do you think is likely to end us all: meteorite, global warming, nuclear weapons, zombies, or the super flu?

While I actually think that the most likely cause of the "end of the world" will be nuclear war, my favorite scenario is a massive 2-year long solar flare that destroys our current technology and power grids, forcing a return to near stone-age lifestyles.

Hey - good one. Though solar flares are actually much shorter lived, a really BIG one can wreck havoc on our current power grids and semi-conductor based tech.

The real draw-back of the solar flare would be all the nuclear warheads sitting in silos around the world which couldn't be fired, but aren't safe to leave there unsupervised, either. Large zones of otherwise good farm/ranch land would be unsafe to use when the warheads start leaking.

See comment above on the solar storms.

As for super-volcano, that's the Toba/Yellowstone style mega eruption.

Which, if memory serves, is a near total "world killer" event that will leave the equivalent of a nuclear winter for several years as the soot/ash/dust settle out of the sky.

For the first one, I imagine a giant reanimated Robert Frost coming back from the dead and setting everything on fire.

Betcha didn't see that one coming, Smartypants!
