If you messed yesterday's friending frenzy post, it's not too late to jump in and make a slew of new friends. The CERN Large Hadron Collider Nonsense
Sometime today, the Large Hadron Collider or LHC will begin the search for the highly elusive Higgs boson, aka - the God particle (Holy Grail) of particle physics. However, there is a irrational fear of a 'mini black hole' being produced. According to these science-hating, tree-hugging environmental twits - "a mini black hole could be produced that would crash through to the core and begin devouring the Earth from the inside out."
The date of Earth's final demise - could it be 2012!!!!
Yeah, riigghhtt. Let's hear it for another scatterbrained end of the world theory that ties in to the ancient Mayan predictions.
These enviro-idiots all casually forget Hawking Radiation. Due to quantum effects, black holes will 'evaporate' or dissipate energy (mass) over time. The amount energy or Hawking Radiation is inversely proportional to the mass of the black hole. For a hole with the mass of the Sun - this would take 10^67 years (!!), but an asteroid sized 'mini hole' (10^11 kg) - this is down to 3 billion years.
Even smaller sized 'mini holes' evaporate much, much faster. Using the equations about 2/3 of the way down the page - a 2.28 x 10^5 kg black hole ( = 228 metric tonnes) would last only 1 sec, while releasing the energy equivalent of 5 trillion tons worth of TNT!
Any black holes created by the LHC would be far smaller - likely in the micro gram range and will evaporate almost instantaneously. Thus, this is another knee-jerk reaction based on half-truths.
