Monday - Part 2

The "Fourth"

Yesterday was pretty much an ordinary day off for me - and I treated it like another Sunday. I did manage to grill up a nice slab of meat (beef) and some veggies, and listened to the massive munitions detonated by the local redneck population. The local fireworks went on for several hours, and continuous noise wrecked my usually peaceful evening of imaging under the stars. Douglas county is under extreme drought conditions and fireworks were "supposedly" banned. Yeah, right - tell that to these moronic, explosion-happy rednecks. So while all this shit was blowing up, I was waiting for some idiot to ignite the woodlands that surround my neighborhood.

Luckily, the Universe decided that it wasn't time to ignite my little corner of the world - at least, not yet..

Lab Work and Opera

The traffic was very light this morning (surprise, surprise) and it has been a rather slow day at the lab. But I did have one surprise - my best friend Bill, a opera singer in Germany made a surprise call around 9:30 AM. After 11.5 years of opera in Ulm, he will be starting a new career in the much larger and highly prestigious State Opera in Stuttgart. Getting the job was the "easy part" - breaking his contract with the the Ulmer Theater has been a bloody pain-the-ass. Switching jobs in Germany can be a nightmare, as many of the "old ways" (i.e.- Guilds and Guild Rules) are still in practice. They have played all manner of games - including blocking his paychecks, messing with his vacation time and strange scheduling of practices -etc. So until January of 2008, he will be working for both organizations - full time at Stuttgart (as Sarastro in the Magic Flute - Fall Season)and as a "Guest Performer" at Ulm.

In the meantime, it feels like a Monday - except the work load is light and 1/2 of GaTech is apparently taking the day off. So - what did you do for the fourth? Picnic? Party? Blow-up shit? Or just 'chill out'?

opera, blowing shit up, july 4th
