dumb ankle...

I do believe it's sprained. I was warming up for a pickup soccer game today, and tried to turn and shoot. Mind you, with no one within 30 feet of me. That sucks. If your foot felt like it was sort of going sideways for a bit, that's probably a sprain. I have a lot of experience with these, sadly. If it hurts like a bitch tomorrow, that's normal and confirms it's a sprain. If you're mostly ok tomorrow but a little tender you lucked out and merely strained it, but still don't fence in it. If you have boots or some sort of shoes that extend up past the ankle these are a godsend for preventing reinjury.

Sprains are your body's way of telling you "stop playing soccer". If you're anything like me, you will go "oh, I feel fine now!" after it has stopped hurting, and go out and do something physical again completely ignorant of the fact that because you fucked it up once it is now vulnerable for a disturbingly long period of time. This is one of the reasons I have had repeated ankle injuries to both my ankles. I suggest you avoid this, not by avoiding physical activity but by wearing stuff that makes it hard for you to roll your foot like that--high shoes, ankle wraps or braces, all that stuff.

These, BTW, suck. I sympathize, and hopefully you just strained it and will be spared all this nastiness.

Wikipedia has links to a couple of good sports medicine articles on when to continue competitive sports. That said, I'll probably stick to fencing for the first month or two after I clear that hurdle
