Week: Day 12 - Day 17

(Day 12)

Dr. Christoph Reichstadt (?? - Day 12, Atlantis Expedition). RIP.

Looks like I just became the permanent department head. "Until you die, or I find someone else," as Rasczak said.

Between a near-panic attack over the new mantle of authority and frantically worrying that I've covered so much, and haven't bothered to double-check my work, Dr. Zelenka decided to call me to his quarters to speak with me. Apparently, he's "intrigued" by me.

Assigned different parts of my work to the department for peer review.

Will now commence to go quietly out of my mind.

(Day 13)

Insomnia returned last night. Took three months at the SGC before it stopped being a problem, but with the 28-hour days and the new experiences, it may take more medical intervention.

This is not good.

Mess R&R - Day 13
[OOC: insert lunchroom gossip here.]

-- Dr. Zelenka (CZE) shows
--- unexpected presence, but did not interrupt findings
--- observed me as I observed

***
(Day 14)

Slept last night, thank God.

Off-World Qualifications
01. Qualify with guns
02. First-aid knowledge
03. O.M.F.G. orientation

Began to qualify with guns. Didn't do too well, since I was unable to watch instructor first, but followed instructions.

Sgt. Bates
01. US Marine
02. Instructs scientists on weapons qualif.
03. Extremely dangerous (observe and be cautious)

(Day 15)

Sleep update: Slept.

Department Reports
01. Harris took over the photos from the mainland site.
Opinion: nothing viable would be there. Had evac been possible, no text would've survived.
02. Walker thinks it could be a grocery list after all.
03. Garibaldi working in conjunction with computer techs to decipher Ancient computer code. Will take some time, however.
04. St. Julian working on the probable higher math.
05. Schulze sent with mainland expedition to survey site first-hand. Wasn't pleased.
06. Pelletier working on the potential "Ancient-to-X" file. Not sure what she'll find, but it could be worth a closer look.

Dr. Zelenka came to my quarters with the expressed intent of "hanging out". I allowed him in for some reason instead of going back to working on the reports so that I would have a comprehensive report for Dr. Weir soon. As inevitably happens around Dr. Zelenka, we began talking.

Second Revision: Dr. Zelenka
01. Tires more easily -- early day instead of late morning in labs. Potential morning person?
02. Has felt out of the loop since the accident.
03. Asked if I considered myself a scientist.
---- A: Needed for translation duties. Anyone familiar with Latin would work.
04. Spoke about prickly colleagues in academia and military.
05. Began college education in Prague, then went to NYC.
06. Already made connections in Prague, so it was easier to be there later in his career.
07. NYU begun satellite in Prague, some overlap with Charles U.
08. Col. Chekov followed Zelenka's work.
09. Zelenka's work -- encoding crystals with basic operating data to revolutionize computers.
10. Humble enough to not talk for hours about personal projects.

When Dr. Zelenka noticed natural human tendency to talk about himself, he mentioned this out loud, and I suggested a game of chess.

Chess Rules
01. One question per piece taken.
02. Answers must be truthful and complete. No lies or omissions.
03. All topics fair game; clarifications can be requested for both questions and answers.
04. When checkmate is declared, questions stop.

We'll see what happens.

ETA: Dr. Zelenka decided to pay me a visit during dinner. This doesn't bode well.

(Day 16)

Dr. Zelenka is very eager. He showed up to my quarters with the chessboard and pieces in tow. According to my first batch of notes, Dr. Zelenka plays chess well enough to play for money, so by forcing him to only be able to ask questions for each piece he took, and not graduating the point scale for different pieces (e.g. allowing three questions for a bishop taken, or allowing five questions for a checkmate), it forces him to sacrifice quick, decisive victories for questions. Since he's "fascinated" by me, he'll go for questions.

Questions Dr. Zelenka Asked
01. Asked about family history. Described major players involved.
02. Asked how many people I consider friends. Nothing but colleagues.
03. Asked about hobbies. Playing tai chi chuan and observation.
04. Asked about "being alone". Both a preference and habit.
[OOC: There might have been more, but none are mentioned here.]

Answers Dr. Zelenka Gave
01. Past Marriages: Yes.
02. Favorite Color: Blue.
[OOC: There might have been more, but none are mentioned here.]

After the chess game, transcribed the notes from mess observations and Dr. Zelenka into my journal.

(Day 17)

Unable to sleep last night, so I let myself wander. Found some balconies with very beautiful views. As much as the Ancients were technologically advanced, it's interesting that they still have so many windows.

Compiled reports and sent them up the chain to Dr. Weir. Took some doing, as some of the attachments didn't want to attach properly. Not as much progress as I would've liked, but the others are being careful and diligent in their work, not half-asleep and half-crazed.

Organized my laptop folders to better deal with reports from different staff members, and different topics of translation. Dr. Weir hasn't replied back to my email, but she could be sifting through others. Also emailed her when she expects to receive dept. evaluations.

Reichstadt, you stupid son of a bitch, why the hell did you have to die and name me in your fucking notes?

non-research, work, notes, zelenka
