Rae forced herself to remain calm and not smirk at how she really expected him to act exactly as he had. The man was rather predictable sometimes. Fortunately, the door was closed so no one could hear them. She put her hands on the desk and leaned forward, looking intently at him.

"Thank you. Now, off the record, do let's have some honesty. I may be physically off work, but my brain is just fine. I expect to be consulted if necessary. I absolutely intend to return to my job. It may be head of the department, but we all still report to Dr. McKay, like it or not. I also will nip it in the bud if I hear one word of gossip insinuating that I gave you this assignment because you are involved with David. I'm giving you this assignment because you've proven you can lead a team and you have supervisory experience. I know you disagree with a lot of the way things are run, and I frankly don't expect to see this department change a whole hell of a lot in two months while I'm off. However, I know you pride yourself on efficiency, and I'm always willing to discuss changes that improve that."

Rae watched the surprise flicker over his face before it settled into his usual expression of arrogant distaste. She smiled and relaxed in her chair. "That being said, thank you for accepting this assignment. If you'll email me your weekly availability, we'll set up a schedule to go over things necessary for the position, ease you into the role before I'm a bit more occupied. Get people used to seeing you in this chair, you might say. I'm sure you'll have a lot to do with shifting assignments to a new Chemistry team lead, so let's get on with our day, shall we?" She stood easily and held out her hand for a handshake. Come on, Doctor, she thought as she waited, try putting some of this crap in past and be a man about it. Rachel prayed she'd made the right decision.

He stands as she does and looks at her outstretched hand suspiciously for a long moment, before sighing and shaking it briefly. "If I thought you were giving me this position because of David, I wouldn't take it." He says, though he's pretty sure it's unneccessary, he wants to make sure she knows that. "And Parrish has already had experience looking after my labs, and she didn't mess them up too much. I'll give it to her, if she's not too busy galavanting around the galazy with Colonel Kirk-Sheppard." He corrects quickly.

"I'll see you around." He says, almost pleasantly as he's leaving. "Still need to sort out schedules."

She nodded at his reassurance that his integrity, as it were, as still intact. Good. If he'd taken for that reason, he'd never have the job. Rae tries not to smirk at his use of Colonel Kirk. hell, the family still occasionally teased him about it. Shaking his hand, she smiled. "Thank you, Dr. Kavanagh. Have a good day."
