HOUSTON CIVIC SYMPHONY
38th Season 2004 - 2005
The Houston Civic Symphony opens their 38th Season with a concert to be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 8th at Talento Bilengue de Houston (TBH), 333 S. Jensen (at Navigation), Houston 77003.

The evening will start with the Overture to Russlan & Ludmilla composed in 1842 by the Russian composer Mikhail Glinka.

Following the overture a performance of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No 4 in D Major will feature Johnny Chang as the soloist. Mr. Chang was born in Taiwan and raised in Costa Rica where he received both Bachelor and licentiate degrees in Violin Performance from the University of Costa Rica. After further graduate studies in the USA Mr. Chang received his Master’s Degree in Violin Performance from Rice University. He has performed as a soloist with many professional orchestras both here and overseas.

After an intermission the concert will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 4 in F Minor. A dramatic piece first performed in Moscow in 1878 the 4th Symphony was written during a very turbulent period of this great Romantic composer’s life.

The conductor for this concert is Dr. Richard Spitz, the assistant conductor of the Civic. Richard has a broad background as a conductor, performer, and educator. He has experience leading ensembles at all levels in both Houston and the Los Angeles areas. He taught for eight years at Houston Baptist University and is currently employed in the Alief School District. As a trombone performer he has worked with many of the major performing ensembles in Houston. Dr. Spitz completed both his D.M.A. (music education) and M.M. (trombone performance) at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Undergraduate studies were completed at The University of Wisconsin - Madison.

As always our concerts are free to the members of the public and tickets are not required.
