Playboy provides nude pictures to the masses and very few people challenge them. They hold a stable corner of the market and the campany isn't going anywhere [except forward] any time soon. So I am forced to ask "What the Hell?" about this situation with Playboy Indonesia. Even the article basically says there was no reason for this!!!!
EDITOR OF PLAYBOY INDONESIA GOES ON TRIAL (Dec. 7, 2006)
JAKARTA (Reuters) - The editor of Playboy Indonesia went on trial on Thursday on charges of distributing indecent pictures to the public and making money from them, which could carry a jail term of up to 32 months.
The magazine's first edition sparked protests in Indonesia in April although it had no nudity and less flesh was visible in the issue than many other magazines on sale in the world's most populous Muslim country.
Editor-in-chief Erwin Arnada has argued Playboy was good for developing a pluralistic society in Indonesia but the prosecution told the South Jakarta court at the start of his trial that it was lewd and broke the law.
"Photos, drawings and articles in Playboy Indonesia magazine were results of the defendant's selection. They were unsuitable for civility and could arouse lust among readers so they violated feelings of decency," said prosecutor Resni Muchtar.
The case involves the first edition.
The subsequent editions of the magazine are still on sale in Indonesian cities despite attacks on its Jakarta office after the April launch. There has been no government move to ban it.
The controversy itself has faded after Playboy Indonesia moved operations to Bali, a Hindu enclave where conservative Islam has little clout, before its June edition.
Indonesia has 220 million people, about 85 percent of whom follow Islam. Most Muslims are moderate, although hold a more cautious attitude on sex aired in public compared to in the West.
In recent years, lifestyle magazines for Indonesia's growing secular middle class have flooded the market, including more racy titles targeting a male audience such as Maxim and FHM.
However, all of them have stopped short of nude pictures.
Founded in 1953, Playboy has some 20 local editions around the world that cater to local taste rather than simply exporting and translating its U.S. content.
