I can't believe I miss teaching. Among other things, of course, but teaching?

Clearly this world has driven me insane.

At least I have my yerba maté now, if nothing else of worth.

[Attached for anyone interested: pages and pages worth of theoretical biostatistical epidemiology models, hand-calculated and plotted. Bored Osamu is bored.]

What did you used to teach?

Biostatistics; Death and Dying; Medicine and Culture; Advanced Epidemiological Methods; a few seminars in population biology, genetic epidemiology of chronic diseases; Special Topics in Epidemiology that can include epidemiology of aging, infectious disease control, or medical anthropology and epidemiology, depending on the semester. Generally this varies, but I tackle 2-3 classes per term.

...Mistress? You actually understand that?

...okay, I understand maybe a fifth of what this first page is saying, but that's what teachers are for, right?

You're interested in science like that?!

Yeah, I know, weird, but mom and dad are too specialized. I want to learn more about stuff like this. Ever since I was little, actually, but I could never find someone to teach me and with the war, it became impossible back home.

So, uh, would you like a student?

Well, I can't guarantee that this would count as academic credit, but, sure. How much statistics do you understand?

The history of my education is messed up enough that credits haven't really mattered anymore. Getting the knowledge is good enough for me.

About the ninth grade level from what the tutors told me, but that was a couple of years ago. I've been able to study it a bit more sparsely over the the past few years, so maybe tenth grade level now?

Hm. To be honest, I've never taught at the high school level before. Would you mind me drawing up an assessment quiz for you? It's purely so I'll know exactly where you are and where I can take you from there.

That'll be okay. I've done those plenty of times.

Well then, here's a short quiz. Take all the time you need.

[Attached: quiz covering descriptive and inferential statistics, levels of measurement, and several forms of tests and procedures. Much of it contains very basic definition questions, but there are some equations and word problems too.]

Okay.

*About two hours later.*

[Attached: Completed quiz. Basic definitions were answered correctly, about half of the word problems, but very few of the equation were done correctly.]

Well, after reviewing your answers...

You have a good start, and a basic understanding which is necessary for more advanced materials. You would be best served with a start on the principles of statistical analysis and an overview of the different forms of tests, procedures, and their uses before going into detail on the equations. This is because of the fact that without an understanding of what the factors actually are, it's very difficult to figure them out in an equation. Please do not consider it an insult. You did better than most of my undergrads in the intro course.

Is there a time and date you'd like to meet? I'm afraid I'm a bit old-fashioned when it comes to teaching and prefer the more personal nature of traditional classrooms over distance learning.

I actually did better?!

I'm a visual learner, so that's probably better. How many times could we meet in a week? And would a time between one to four work out okay on those days?

((OOC: Strikes are thoughts.))

Would Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 1-2 pm work for you? I have about an hour and a half off for lunch and it doesn't take me that long to eat.

dnaofahalfa May 16 2009, 23:34:51 UTC
That's okay. And you could eat if you needed to while you teach me. A lot of science stuff I learned from dad and he'd do that.

Sounds good to me. If you can be at Axoryi Hospital then, we'll do that. Just tell the front desk you need to see me and they'll show you to my office.

I'll be there!

Oh, um, what's your name?

I'm Dani Gray.
