While listening to Dr Horrible in my car last night I had a thought.  Forgive me if it's already been mentioned here and somehow managed to escape me.  I remember reading a quote from Joss saying he's had the idea for the freeze ray song for quite a while.  That, combined with the Johnny Snow/Jonathan comparison some have been making made me wonder

I've often wondered what Warren, Andrew, and Jonathan were singing about off-camera ('cause everyone in Sunnydale was singing, right? so they must have been singing about something even if it wasn't part of the episode). And I can't see Joss not at least considering including a song for them in that ep, so I could totally see that being the origin of Freeze Ray, even if it ended up being something else entirely.

I like to imagine Joss has a notebook of song lyrics. I think he seriously needs to write a Broadway musical.

That's an interesting thought, actually. It could well work, I mean, all musical's in the works have songs changed, or shunted all together. And yes, it is indeedy in the right time frame. Hooray for trying-so-hard-to-be-evil-but-you-love-them-anyway nerds.

I believe in one of the interviews posted earlier in this comm, Joss said that he'd written My Freeze Ray first as sort of a guide to the sound of the whole musical. I could be remembering wrong, and he could have just meant that he'd already written it and then decided to use it that way. If you go back and look for interviews, it's the one where he's asked who wrote which songs and how they were assigned.
