The drive-in wasn't just drunks watching cheesy movies and teenagers having sex (or hoping to). Lots of folks got there well before dusk. They stood around chatting, smoking cigarettes and drinking beer and eating awful awful food. Children played on swings and slides and generally ran around like screaming lunatics. (Parents hoped this would tire the urchins out so they would fall asleep in the back seat and let the parents watch the movies in peace). I don't know how well this semi-unsupervised activity would go over today. It seems that the safer we get, the more we live in fear. Fretful Nation, that's our way now.
