How's that timetable of world conquest working out?

From July 1962..




One of the more distinctive graphics of two eras was the map showing a bright red or black blob spreading out over the globe, representing the growth of conquered nations. If it represented Nazi Germany, there would be a swastika; if it was showing the Soviet Union, a hammer and sickle. Many times, the blob would have an evil octopus head.

You don't see much of this ominous graphic anymore. Actually, I suppose the closest we get are charts showing the extent of global warming, decline of the ozone layer, that sort of thing. Unsettling in a different way, but not the same at all.
