[Locked from all County Employees (and former Employees) save for Abby] Am I a Control Freak?

When it comes to surgical cases and deciding how to run my OR, yes. Absolutely, I am. I don't think that it's unreasonable to want to sedate a patient that has to undergo surgery. A general is much more efficient than a local. It's also easier for the anesthesiologist to manage in case of complications. How do I know this? Maybe by being an ( Read more... )

BKA.

Below the knee. It's a fairly simple procedure and one I've done many times, Alex. However, in this case it was supposed to only be a couple of toes...until we got in there and took a look at the soft tissue.

In this case? Decalcified and brittle. If it continued to spread the patient would have been unable to walk because the bones would not hold her weight. And seeing as she is diabetic, the gentler, less invassive treatments were not working. She wasn't healing so taking the lower half of her leg was the best course of action to save her life.

With a prosthetic, she'll be able to walk normally.

What? No, Alex. This woman not only did not manage her diabetes properly she also neglected her injuries for a very long time. By the time she decided to seek medical help, it was simply too late.

There is no reason to think that you face a similar fate.

I promise, Alex.

This woman waited well over a year to do something about an injury that had not healed. If she had acted sooner, she probably would not have even lost a toe.
