Here are some figures.
Diameter of Earth-12,756 km
Diameter of Pluto- 2274
Diameter of Jupiter-142,984
Juiter to Earth approx 11:1 approx Earth to Pluto 6:1
I could have easily rounded to 12:1 and 5:1. And these measurements are only diameters. If I had chosen to compare mass or volume, both of which increase exponetially as diameter increases, then the fractions would have been much more astounding.
The point is, who are we, living on a planet that seems so gigantic to us and that regularly kicks our asses, to call Pluto a "lesser planet" and give our insignificant orb full planet status.
If the fastest man in the world ran the fastest he's ever run, without sleeping, it would take him eight days to run all the way around pluto. And when the greatest minds in science get together for a few days they are able to convice themselves that, compared with our humble abode, Pluto is a "lesser planet."
Humanity is so incredibly blind sometimes.
