She huffs. "I care deeply for River, Simon and I don't see how bein' in love threatens 'er well-bein'! It might just threaten hers just as much as MINE!" she stands than. "Love ain't supposed t'be questioned, Simon and I'm sorry that you think it should."

She shakes her head. "But, everythin' turned out alright, Simon! Why can't you look past all that! Life ain't about livin' in the past. Look at everythin' that has happened! River and Jayne deserve to be happy too cause they love each other. Why can't love heal all that hurt?" The tears were starting to form in her eyes.

Kaylee and tears is a combination that always destroys Simon. He hates seeing her cry.

All he can do is answer, "I don't know yet. I need some time...and space...to deal with this on my own terms. Just...please...I don't want to fight about this."

She casts her eyes down to fight against the tears. She hated crying just as much as Simon hated seeing her do it.

"I'm sorry.....and.....and I'll go." she whispers moving to leave and give him his "space".

He sighs and squeezes his eyes shut as she turns to leave. Whatever anger he had been feeling was bleeding away.

How do I get myself into these things? he wonders.

He opens his eyes and turns to watch as she nears the door. "Kaylee...I..." he says quietly, voice cracking. "I'm sorry. I'm not mad at you...I'm just...not ready to let her go yet," He whispers.

She stops when he hears his voice and turns to look at him.

"I know, honey." she whispers. "But, I think in time you'll see that you ain't lettin' 'er go, your just lettin' 'er live."

His words to River in the cafe come back to him. I can't keep living life for you...

He nods with a sigh. "I know," he replies quietly. He looks defeated. Won't stop him from pummeling Jayne if he sees the man, though.

She nods and looks out the door before back at Simon.

"You...you still want me to go?" she whispers.

Sad half-smile. "I never want you to go," he replies. "...If...if you want to stay, you can. I won't be very good company, but..." he shrugs.

She walks over to him and tilts his chin up with a finger and gives him a soft peck on the lips.

"How about I'll be in th'engine room, if you need me?" she whispers.

He feels something melt inside him as she kisses him. A re-affirmation that things would be okay.

He nods. "Thank you," he whispers back. And then, because it'll kill him if he doesn't, he wraps his arms around her and hugs her close.

"I really am sorry."
