There's something he doesn't want me to have, something special.
The thought formed in his brain as he looked at his father, River's missives held between them. And what hurt the most was that the words were true. Gabriel Tam didn't care about his children so much as he cared what kind of reputation he could glean from them. And boy did he ever reap a hearty harvest. His son was top of his class and on his way to a great and glorious career; his daughter was not only a genius for her age, but she was attending the finest school that money could buy. Gabriel Tam's future was all set.
Simon Tam's future, on the other hand, was not.
Every time he looked at his father, Simon heard those ten words echo in his head. They were death-knell to his very existence, and when those words were combined with the love he held for his sister his heart began to harden in resolve, and he knew precisely what he had to do. He spent a lot of time and money to set up his sister's rescue, and he prepared himself to give up everything he had ever known. It wasn't hard to do; in fact, his parents had been so only in title and never in word or deed. He already had no family outside of River, and as he saw it, he was going home.
It didn't surprise him in the least when the first thing that ran through his head after meeting Doctor Mathias were those same words that Simon's father always invoked in the younger Tam. It seemed to be the chorus of his life. But now, it was time for the chorus to end, and for his life to truly begin. Dragging the persona of his borrowed identity around him tightly, he stared down his nose at Mathias in a way that would have appalled him less than nine months ago.
It was time to take back what was his. "I wish to see your prized pupil..."
