One Year Down

Jul 16, 2006 22:56

Today marks one year since the release of HBP. Let me then mark the occasion with a few comments, in three categories:

(1) The Book, In Retrospect

At the time I commented: "Wow, what a book. Not always what I expected; but, I would say, the best installment since PoA." ( Read more... )

Chapters 9-11. Maybe the first Horcrux pursuit? Maybe they realize that RAB's Locket was at Privet Drive...

Privet Drive? How would the locket get there? Or did you mean Grimmauld Place? (Or is my HP just that rusty?)

Chapters 13-14. Beginning of the new school year, including new DADA teacher.

What about potions? I noticed nothing about Snape in your chapter list. I can't think they'd let him come back to teach, even if he was in conspiracy with Dumbledore. (Which I don't believe either, but I can think of a few reasons why Dumbledore would have wanted him to do what he did...One would be to protect Harry in the possible DE attack when he comes of age. But does Voldemort even know that Harry's protection is set to expire? I imagine he has an idea, but would it be concrete enough for him to risk an attack that could go wrong?)

Oops-- "Privet Drive" corrected to "Grimmauld Place" above. Thanks!

What about potions?

As far as I could tell at the end of HBP, Slughorn will still be around (assuming that the school itself is, which I expect it to be; a closure is possible, but I'm not expecting them to actually do that). But with DADA, Voldemort's curse still remains valid, and Snape's departure is one more means by which it has continued. (It is possible, though, that whoever teaches it this year will stay long-term, as when Voldemort expires, the curse on the job will do likewise. Could be a new character, although Tonks would be a very cool choice.)

I'm also expecting Slughorn to serve as Head of Slytherin in Snape's absence. Not sure who would head up Gryffindor with McGongall promoted to Headmistress; can you imagine Hagrid...?!?

Great post, Dr C. This is what we need more of at the Quill. I agree with you wholeheartedly on the state of the fandom issue. When I first started really getting into the Harry Potter fandom, I was a little too young and (I'm sorry to say it) considered myself not intellectual enough for the Quill's discussions, although I lurked habitually and was always up to date on most of the posts on the threads. The fanfiction I devoured on an almost daily basis also belonged to the "Golden Age": Earthwalk, Jedi B, Morrighan and Sphinx being numbered among my all-time favourites ( ... )

I had the distinct impression -- though I'm not saying it's a correct one, I'd have to read the book again to be sure -- that Harry, Hermione and Ron would not be returning to Hogwarts for school this year, but would spend the entire year chasing Horcruxes.

I know this is a fairly radical departure for JKR from the boarding-school motif, but given the way she pulled Harry out of Quidditch in OotP and HBP, pulling him out of school doesn't seem that far-fetched.
