Tarsus IV

From what few details were available to him, one conclusion was evident. The condition of the twelve survivors temporarily in his care could have been far worse. When they first flooded Sickbay, he fought hard to suppress the anger that swelled inside him lest it be misinterpreted. Who could treat these children so deplorably? He found himself silently wishing harm on the individual or persons responsible. Eye for eye, tooth for tooth. It wasn't in the doctor's nature though to stay angry and the feeling quickly faded. It was replaced by a sense of growing admiration.

Jim, their leader, had moved quickly to set a good example. Wary of the doctor and his staff, the rest all eventually followed suit under her firm yet gentle direction. She kindled hope and exuded charisma. It became clear she was the reason the group was so closely knit and in relatively good shape.

Thankfully with time and careful administration, their malnutrition could be easily treated. He wondered as he fed the youngest patient a meager meal if the psychological ramifications could ever truly be addressed. Andrew looked up from his bread and peas. There in his eyes, Boyce saw something he had yet to see since their arrival. The first signs of trust began to shine.

The old man couldn't help but smile.
