Winter Approaches

As they were marched under guard into the camp, Phil did his best to inspect his surroundings. Bedraggled soldiers hunched over campfires. Thousands of them maneuvered about the grounds, going about their duties. Even women and a handful of children were present in the miserable setting. Makeshift tents were formed in rows. Larger, sturdier ( Read more... )

One of the men responded with a grunt as they trodded on. Amara raised an eyebrow. "Talkative bunch...." She glanced around then lowered her voice. "I think I'm really inappropriately dressed for this century..."

Many of the individuals along the way stop what they're doing to have a look at the prisoners. They don't look anything like the other prisoners that have been through. "With any luck, they'll believe us when we explain we're not the enemy."

They're both rewarded with a nudge in the back.

She was about to ask what exactly their story would be when they were nudged. She hated being prodded along and turned to glare, "Do you mind?"

"The second to the last hut," the soldier behind her ordered.

"Thank you." Her tone was less than gracious, and borderline sarcastic, but she was cold and wet and not in the mood for being polite. She went in and looked around. "At least it's inside..."

The door was shut securely behind them. Although inside, it was still damp and cold. There weren't any provisions for a fire. Two benches sat to the rear of the room. It didn't look like the inside of the brig but it was definitely a prison.

"I want to see the General!" Boyce yelled through the closed door.

She hugged herself to stay warm and shifted back and forth on her feet, figuring motion would help her stay warm. "General?" She asked. "Any guesses as to where we are?"

She might very well laugh at him but he's never been shy about voicing his thoughts. He isn't about to start now. "I think it's the winter of 1777 and I think this is General Washington's encampment at Valley Forge."

"Well... you are definitely right about the winter part." She sighed. "So do we stay or break out?"

"I think we should stay for the moment. We have a roof over our heads. That's more than we can say for an hour ago. At least until we figure out how to return to our own time," he said. "Or wake up."

"Waking up would be nice." She went over to the door to check it out, just in case they changed their minds. "So what do we tell them? 'Hi, we're from the future, could I have some pants or something please?'?"

Her comment produced a small smile, a welcome feeling given the recent events. For as long as he can remember, she's always had the knack for defusing tense situations with well placed humor. Intentional or not. "Maybe 'lost' will be a concept they'll better understand."

"And the uniforms? We were definitely getting some looks. Or at least I was. Knees are apparently interesting, who knew?" She rolled her eyes a little and continued to examine the door. "This would not be hard to get open, just in case we need to."

Well, she has very nice knees. Not that he's looked. Really. They're very hard to miss.

His expression grew serious. "Let's wait a little while and see what happens. If they think we're spies, I don't suspect we'll be waiting long."

"Lovely. Don't they hang spies during this time period?"

"I don't remember," he answered honestly.
