Techy upgrades - PVR

Since I know others have more experience of such things than I, I'm after some advice.

Our freeview box crashes on an almost daily basis. So it needs replacing.
I love the idea of TiVo, and PVRs generally. I'd like to be able to save some recordings for long-term storage.
I don't want to pay for subscription TV.

So my options seem to be:
1. Buy a new freeview box and wait 'til the perfect PVR or PVR/DVD comes along. Or is it already here?
2. Buy a Freeview/PVR combi. Wait until there's something I really want to save (and PVR runs low on space) before getting a decent DVD recorder.
3. Buy an all-in-one combi from Panasonic.

I'm currently inclined towards option 2, as there are two apparently reliable systems with decent software, >150Gb storage and twin digital tuners plus analogue (Humax and Topfield). But neither is formally Mac compatible for uploading software updates. Although the latter has third party (shareware or freeware) software for Mac uploads currently at beta test level. But then I've not really looked into the other options thoroughly.

Anyone have any suggestions/recomendations?
