The Best Things In Life Are More Than A Moment Long

At what moment in your life did you feel most proud?

Bonnie stared down at the phone in front of her.  She knew where Devon was staying, knew how to get in touch with him, so why was she hesitating?  It couldn’t be as simple as being stubborn, could it?

Okay, that was a dumb question.

There was no reason not to call him.  She had all but decided.  Going back to school had been a good break and it was something she’d thought she wanted at the time, but seeing Michael, Kitt, and Devon again had made her realize how much she missed her life with the Foundation.  Her post doctorate program had been interesting, but there was something missing.  She just didn’t think that research for research’s sake was what she wanted anymore.  She needed to do something meaningful -- something that could actual help people.

Bonnie had always been proud of making it through her PhD program and getting her degree. Getting her research project funded through MIT would be icing on the cake, but somehow it didn’t feel like enough.  It was a single moment and an individual accomplishment.  It wasn’t as fulfilling as being part of a team that was actually working to make a difference.  It wasn’t as rewarding as actually putting her skills to use in the real world.  It wasn’t as rewarding as taking care of Kitt.

She just didn’t like quitting like this.  Granted, it was a good time to leave.  With David Halston showing his true colors, the program would likely to be in some turmoil for quite a while.  People would assume that she was leaving because of that, even though that couldn’t be further from the truth.  Part of her wanted to be able to finish what she had started.  But the only reason it would matter was if she planned to continue in academia, and she was pretty sure at this point that that wasn’t the path she wanted to take.

So she could put off doing what she really wanted to do just so that she wouldn’t be ‘quitting,’ or she could stop being stubborn, call Devon, and start doing what she was meant to do again.

The things she was most proud of in her life were not individual moments, but lifelong journeys.  And it was time to start traveling again.

Bonnie picked up the phone and dialed Devon’s number.
