[OS] After Hours

Jan 14, 2011 15:29

It’s after hours and most people in school was already gone. It was only at time like this that the practice rooms would be free for a “Half-admission” student such as herself, other times the other students just made fun of her appearance (even after she had lost quite a lot of weight already), called her incompetent and told her to get out of their way. And she, Kim Pilsuk, had no confidence to stand up to them.

Jinguk, her tall ‘half-admission’ classmate had suggested her to use the practice room after everyone was gone, saying he had done so himself. They were all working hard for the mid-term exams. Others in the class wanted to excel to proof themselves worthy of this school. Pilsuk just wanted to do well so she could remain IN the school, so she could continue singing, and so she could continue seeing him.

Just thinking about him made her face heated up, and she couldn’t help but replay all the little precious moments in her head. Her current favorite being when she played piano for him as he practiced his singing, how he turned around and smiled at her like she was the girl he was singing about.

Shaking herself out of her reminiscing, Pilsuk took out her music sheets. She had chosen a rather difficult love song for her test. The notes were high and the song focused a lot on vocal, so she could not mess up even a single note. Not to say it’s originally a male artist’s song so she had to change a few lyrics here and there but it’s a song that spoke for her heart…and she wanted to sing it…to him. And may be, just may be…he would notice her, just a little bit.

With a pencil in her hand she concentrated on the music sheets, determined to work out the vocals first. Pilsuk started to sing.

It’s already dusk when Jason walked down the hall way to head home. He had just woken from a little nap on the rooftop, where he usually went to practice alone. It’s not like anyone would deny him the use of a practice room, but the large mob that appeared out of nowhere whenever he practiced was a little annoying. So he opted for the rooftop and only came down when the crowd has already gone home.

He was grabbing his backpack out of the locker when he heard a voice singing.

“Hm…It’s good.”

He mumbled to himself, smiling a little. The voice sounded familiar and the song was nice. It was, indeed, one of his favorites. Jason followed the voice to a practice room. The only one with the lights still on and look in.

“ To be honest, when I first met you,
Saying ‘I like you’ was difficult for me to say…
If I don’t approach first, I was afraid I would lose you
So I wrote a letter and prepared a small gift for you…”

Alone in the large practice room was the shy Miss Sushi, who was totally absorbed in singing and making notes of her vocals and was totally unaware of him watching her. Her voice was so pure, so sweet, so emotional he could tell she was pouring her heart out into the song.

He smiled.

“If my love for you gets deeper, I knew it would only hurt me more
It’s true that my mind is full of fears…
With my anxious heart I prayed and hope
I believe that person is you…”

Jason cocked his head to one side as he quietly observed her. He hadn’t seen much of the shy girl since she was transferred to ‘half-admission’ class because of her appearance. Shame. The girl got more talent that those prick in this school who made her life miserable. She’s lost a lot of weight since then…

It’s surprisingly out of his character to be worried about someone…but the girl was nice to him and-

“I’m…I’m in loph…I…I pholl in loph-…AH!!! OTTOKE?!!”

Jason couldn’t help the soudless chuckles at the girl’s failed English lyrics. Her explosive reaction was real cute too, shaking the music sheets like it’s the bane of her existence throwing her arms up in the air like that…

He watched as she quickly calmed herself down, her cheeks was puffed as she pouted and made notes in the paper before starting again from the previous verse…

A smile that had not left his face grew a little wider, and mysterious gleams lit his eyes as Jason crept around her back into the practice room

“If my love for you gets deeper, I knew it would only hurt me more
It’s true that my mind is full of fears…
With my anxious heart I prayed and hope
I believe that person is you…”

Pilsuk takes a deep breath, determined to get it right this time she opened her mouth and-

“I’m…I’m love…I…I fall in love
I can’t help it. I can’t hide my heart.
You’re so beautiful”

Perfect voice. Perfect English. Perfect piano. A perfectly perfect man was there right before her singing those words.

“ I thought I was never gonna fall in love
But I’m in love, cause’ I wanna love you, baby.”

Pilsuk’s mouth hung open in shock as she watched the man of her dreams sat in front of the piano and sang. Her mind went totally blank and nothing else in the universe seemed to matter at the moment. And she had to stop herself from pinching her face to see if this was really happening.

She didn’t know how she had managed to make herself function but when he turned to smile at her and give her a little nod. She sang the next part and never felt the lyrics to be truer than in that moment.

“To be honest, when I first met you, somewhere in my heart
You crashed in like a strong wave
You’re the only one I think about all day.”

Jason took over at the English lyrics and she just about to melt.

“I can be a good lover. Wanna be your four-leafed clover.
I’ll make you the happiest woman in this world.
You gotta believe me. Make you never gonna leave me.
I don’t want to make promises. I’ll just show it to you.”

He gave her another nod and she couldn’t help but answer his invitation. Even when she would really hate anything messing up this magical moment, especially her bad English, she could not help but sing, when Jason silently asked her to sing along with him.

“I’m…I’m love…I…I fall in love
I can’t help it. I can’t hide my heart.
You’re so beautiful”

It must be his spell or something, because suddenly she could suddenly sing the English part perfectly. And their voices blended perfectly as the music rise. His warm velvet voice intertwined with her clear sweet one. It was as if his voice reached the deepest part of her heart and demanded Pilsuk to give up her heart to the song, to him, she really couldn’t help it.

“I’m…I’m love…(I’m so deep in love)…I…I fall in love
I can’t help it. I can’t hide my heart.
You’re so beautiful”

He was looking at her, smiling again. And she was could not sing anymore. She could hardly breathe at the moment, and she was sure her heart stopped entirely when he spoke, instead of singing, the last verse of the song to her.

“You’re so beautiful…”

The last note of the piano fades away into the evening, but Pilsuk felt as if there was still magic in the air, because he didn’t fade away. Jason was still sitting there at the piano smiling at her. And somewhere far  far in the back of her mind, she was screaming.

‘OMG Did that just happened? OMG JASON is sitting right there! OMG He’s so good looking!! OMG He sang with me! His voice is so perfect! Everything about him is perfect! OH-MY-GOD DOES HE KNOW?!!!!...’

Something was moving in front of her eyes and she blinked and got a mini-heart attack when she found him waving his hand in front of her, his face not a mere foot from her face.

“Hello? Miss Sushi? Are you alright?”

“Ah! YES!” She immediately lowered her gaze to the floor and automatically took a step back, so she missed a flash of frown that come to him and was gone in an instant.

“ I’m sorry I intrude on your practice. I didn’t think there’s still someone here so I came to check it out.”

“Ah! No! It’s alright!...I was just…practicing and…yeah I was…I had a little problem with the lyrics…the English pronunciation…Thank you for helping me out with that.”

Pilsuk was in a fluster trying to explain that to him. Jason found that cute. This was the longest conversation he ever had with the girl and he felt like he should talk to her more from now on.

“It was nothing. You played for my practice before too, remember? Your pronunciation was just fine in that last verse. You just need to practice it a little bit. Are you going to do this song for your exam? It feels like you’re singing it for someone…”

“Ah…yes. I mean I’m doing it for the exam…and…it’s for someone…as well…”  She did NOT believe she just said that. Pilsuk’s face went red and she stared hard at the floorboards as if they held the answer to all her dilemma.

“It’s great. You’ll surely get top scores for this.” Jason smiled and complimented her sincerely. He paused for a moment before adding with an unreadable expression on his face. “And the guy you sing this for is really lucky.”

“If only he knows…” She mumbled and stole a glance at him.

Only to find his dark brown eyes staring right back at her.

She froze.

The corner of his lips curved up into the patented half smirk-half smile-and all charms.

“Don’t worry. I’m sure he does.”

Jason winked and did that ‘OK’ sign thing to her.
She didn’t respond….Her brain had totally stopped functioning.

Jason said something to her. [“It’s getting late. And it’s cold out. Don’t practice too hard and go home quickly.”]
She could only blink...His words did not register.

It was only after an eternity…,or in fact, 10 minutes after he was gone that Pilsuk regain SOME control of her body…and she found herself all alone, in the practice room. The sky has already gone dark. And she would’ve thought that she had imagined it all if she didn’t feel something warm around her neck.

Looking down, she found a white MALE scarf wrapped loosely around her neck. The music sheets, which she must’ve dropped sometime during her stupor, were neatly stacked on the piano. An unfamiliar, but beautiful hand writing was scribbled at the very end of the first page.

Good night, Kim Pilsuk. See you tomorrow. -J
