This whole composition project has given me a whole new appreciation for people who are songwriters. I mean, I've always sort of marvelled at it. I never knew how Matt could just sit with his guitar and make up a melody. Like any talent, some people have a knack for it and others (such as myself) don't. Sure, I understand how to write music, but I don't have a natural talent for it. Oh, well. I'll just sing the songs that the brilliant people write. But, really, what makes a song successful or meaningful? Why do we pick certain songs to listen to on repeat? Is it the song itself or the way we connect the song to our own experience? Or can it just be a beautiful song. Over the weekend I've had two song obessesions. One is the Rufus Wainwright version of "Hallelujah." The other one is "No One is Alone" from Into the Woods. Most of the time when I listen to a song I think I listen to the words more than the music, but with these two it's definitely been about the music. I'm in a total immersion mood right now. I just want to spend a day sitting in my room or in the park or something listening to music. I mean, I listen to music most of the time anyways, but it's usually in the background. I want it to be the focus. The beauty of being a music student is that I can do something like that and call it "research."
