"There's never a dull moment at Mount Vernon." -One of those statements those of us who have worked there for a while know this to be a true statement. Today was right up there in the not dull category. The film crew returned to Mount Vernon to film for the 18 minute film in the new Orientation Center. (opening in the fall) They were sloted to be in the center of the house all day long, disrupting the house flow a bit and keeping most of us outside and the price of admission was docked down. The morning started off slow but boy did it pick up as the day wore on. For the most part the visitors seemed to be accepting of the fact that filming was going on today and that they couldn't see the whole house, but there were some that weren't too happy.
Right before lunch I was hanging out on the east lawn chatting with colleagues and film crew. The crew is really nice, offering up their food to those of us who work there. Only bad thing, I hadn't eaten lunch yet while I stood there and everything started to look good. I was grateful for the humus they offerred to me. While I was standing there some of the actors walked by, the children (portraying the grandchildren) were adorable, and I did see the two actors playing Mrs. Washington and General Washington go right past me. Recognized the actress playing Mrs. Washington right off the bat and it took me a while till I figured out where I'd seen her and then all day wondered to myself is that really who I think? Sure enough it was Mia's mom from the Princess Diaries. Never do know who you might see at Mount Vernon.
The rest of my day progressed nicely as most of my time was spent outside, except for my few stints inside. Being in the large dinning room during the filming was an experience, "quiet please" and "rolling", "cut" were among the words I was hearing from the outside. It's an experience to be talking and then suddenly have to stop so the crew can film while you've got a number of people in front of you. There were some girls in one group that the two or three times they called for quiet, they would sink to the floor and look through the parlor to see what was going on. Quite amussing and their chaperones wished they could have taken a picture of that.
By the end of the day I was pretty much done and had to go meet up with my manger for an interview. I applied for the fourth time to be full time and this interview was on the formal end yet again. I was nervous as one of my supervisors sat in on the interview too. Over all I think it went well and I was able to answer all of the questions presented to me. I do however think they want me to get some more programs under my belt soon and I'm gonna work at that. She was impressed how with each suggestion I was given I took and accomplished in my own good time. Brownie points too for the bus travel and being reliable and there a lot. Full time hours at part time status for over a year. Until I find out I will get some other things finished up and acquire other knowledge. All of this will help in the long run and may have been holding me back in the past. And with all the times I've applied and been given that encouragement to keep trying, I think my manager would love to give me some good news one of these days.
