"I didn't leave the Republican party. The Republican party left me."

The thing about common sense is that it is often subjective - so either end of the spectrum would wildly disagree with what you suggest.

That is true. However, absolutes are not subjective by definition. And that's what I would really like to see us get away from. Don't outlaw guns. But don't let everyone buy whatever they please. Anything towards a middle ground, to me, is progress.

Agree wholeheartedly with both of you. I never thought Rob & I would vote the same on anything. My parents are going to disown me, but the RNC truely needs this slap in the face - An incredibly large number of evangelicals does not necessarily equate with "centrist" or "majority".

My parents are still convinced that Rob is not a Democrat; he's just 'confused'. They make this observation in the same whispered tones that they would use to refer to homosexuality.

I am a Democrat. They know this, but appear to have managed to achieve complete denial on the topic.

That said, I would like to see the re-creation of the Republican party to reflect Republican views. I would like the two party system to be about two actual parties, not The Crazies, The Differently Crazy, and The Middle Folks Who Are Wondering What Happened. I would like the evangelical extremes (and the liberal extremes, while we're at it) to both be a little embarrassed to admit their views in public. I would like the crazy people to be labeled as crazy instead of as the volatile majority that cannot be ignored no matter what they spew.

Then again, I also want pie. So it goes.

You know, I wish I made a point to have a serious political discussion with you years ago.

It's refreshing to know I'm not the only one who isn't leaning rabidly this way or the other. Thanks for posting. :)
