A call to arms -- er, books!

"Books: the best weapons in the world. Arm yourselves."

--------------------------

Now that I have my placement (even though I probably won't find out the exact grade level until Monday), I'm starting to turn my classroom vision into a reality here in the Queen City. I won't know the actual aesthetics of my room until teacher workdays start, but one of the biggest elements of my "Big Goal" for this upcoming school year is to foster an environment where reading isn't a chore, but a privilege. A good number of my students won't be coming from households where books are in large supply; thus, I want to build up my own classroom library with as many (diverse) books as possible.

But I could definitely use some help!

A good book is a gateway to other worlds -- whether it's a window looking out onto ancient India, a look at modern day Afghanistan or an eagle's flight to Middle Earth -- that can ultimately serve as the impetus that pushes students a little closer to the futures they dream for themselves.

Sadly, my "library" is at a grand total of 9 books at present. I regularly haunt consignment shops and used book stores, but now I'm turning to all of you!

Now, you know who you are. Maybe you haven't cleaned out your bookshelf in ages. Your kids have gone off to college and left all their high school required readings behind. You're a bibliophile like me, perhaps, and have doubles of some literary favorites. Maybe you bought a cache of classics for college courses and never looked at them again. Don't let them gather dust! Send them to me! Not only will you reduce clutter and give to a good cause, but I'll make sure they're put to excellent use and see plenty of love in the hands of my students (who will be forced to care for them on pain of death).

Live nearby? I can pick them up! Not so close? That's what the mail is for. But in all seriousness: I would be honored by any books you might be willing to part with, and will happily provide my shipping address is you're so inclined to pass some of your treasures along. Let me know!

*hugs all around* :D
