So I'm back at work, which means back to internet. I've been away all this time partly because tumblr and facebook took up almost all my online time, and because I haven't got internet at home

I don't know how up to date you are with anime o manga in general, but the last hype, the definitely must-see series is Shingeki no Kyojin - although after you're done with the first 24 episodes you have to wait for the second season, as it is an ongoing manga. It's exciting, highly dramatic and pretty intense, with excellent animation and a great voice cast (I only know the Japanese version). It's about the will to survive and the fighting spirit of humanity, set approximately 2000 years into the future, in the aftermath of an attack that almost erased mankind. The attackers are titans (giant anthropomorph creatures) which have apparently one weakness...but I don't want to spoil your fun. Just watch the first episode and you'll see.
There was another series about a demon king and his servant, who were in the middle of battle in their own world, and got flung over here. They end up in Tokyo, unable to speak a word of Japanese, not knowing where they are or what happened or how to go back. Somehow, the King finds a job... at a fast-food restaurant XD Sounds stupid told like this, but I promise it's great. Very moving at times, funny, and surprisingly good in its narrative. I still don't know why, but at the time it reminded me of Genshiken and (the good parts of) Haruhi. It's Hataraku Maou-Sama.
Another new series, finishing next Sunday, is Noragami, the brilliantly animated story of a wandering god (as it happens, that's what Noragami means) who has no sanctuary, no believers, nobody even knows him. He comes across a young girl by accident, and everything revolves about her trying to understand him and other creatures of the Beyond. It's fun, creative, oddly realistic, and the character development is probably the best I've seen in anime in a long time. For once, I ADORE the girl - she's not at all the annoying "tsundere", screechy-voiced teen we have been flooded by in recent years. And again, the voice cast is great.
If you missed it four years ago, you should definitely watch Durarara!! now, as we'll have a second season soon, to celebrate the ten years of publication of the novels. It's the very strange tale of a handful of people who live in the neighbourhood of Ikebukuro (in Tokio) and the strange happenings there. If I had to cathergorise it, I'd say it's magical realism, as there's a supernatural being roaming the streets. Funny, imaginative, and cleverly told, another great cast and loveable characters all around. If you've seen Baccano!, Durarara!! is a must.
I've seen a ton more during the summer but for some reason I can't remember any more right now, haha. For now, this should get you started! Let me know what you think!
I've actually seen Shingeki no Kyojin because it was so hyped that even I, in my anime wasteland, caught wind of it. I actually had some trouble getting into it at first. Mainly because I hated Eren. But then Levi showed up and I loved it. From the Female Titan on was non-stop amazing to me.
I can't wait to see the rest of these. You make them all sound so good. :D
Why did you hate on poor Eren bb? It's ok, I hated everything about the series until titan!Eren appeared - too many plot holes, me thinks - and I agree: the last 5-6 episodes were breathless. I hope you like them! :D
Ugh. I think everything I dislike about Eren is in that scene where he's in the woods with Levi, trying to escape from the Female Titan, and he keeps dithering about whether he should abandon the plan and turn into a Titan or not and he just keeps going on and on and over reacting and finally Levi is just like, "Do it or don't, already!" I dunno, I feel like they use Eren's panic as filler and it gets old.
Totally agree about the last 5-6 episodes! Completely made up for whatever I found lacking in the opening.
