On translating

Since December - well, the last days of it at least - I've been working on editing subtitles.

I started with Sherlock, because I had promised my students to share it with them and since apparently I'm the only one in this country aware of its existence, there is no way to spread the love other than burning downloaded episodes and giving them to people. Judge all you want, I've already told one of my friends he has to buy it for me on his next trip.

I found a downloadable version of the BluRay edition, which is awesome and my mouth waters at all the beauty, but it's dubbed in Spanish. And the last thing I want is to ruin this incredible, amazing show by removing the original voices. Especially Benedict's, which is the best thing that ever happened to my ears in the English language.

Now, the subs in Spanish... believe me, I spent hours searching for decenttly timed ones, and then I found horrendous, beginner-level mistakes that I can't possibly understand how could someone make them. I'm currently halfway through The Great Game, though the timing is all wrong and it's hair-pullingly frustrating.

So I decided to take a break... by translating the perfectly timed subs for Van Gogh: Painted with Words. It's heartbreaking, and so educative - I'm learning a lot about art, it's even becoming an interest of sorts. But, dear God, there are so many art-related terms I don't know, it's giving me a terrible headache. Nevertheless, watching Benedict brilliantly performing Van Gogh's slow descent into madness makes the whole experience worthwhile. And me, being the empathic sob that I am, can't help feeling so sad for the poor man.

In my search for reference - I needed the names of his works in Spanish - I found a most interesting site which I hope to immerse myself in as soon as I finish, hopefully this weekend. It's here, you'll find other languages versions scrolling down a bit.

the beautiful ones, voces del cielo, pasiones de la mente
