Since happiness doesn't make a story, and that in a series you need some drama to get things going, I'm fairly sure they'll have to face many problems (and JF hinted at that). Be it as a couple against some external force (like Anna and Bates) or some deeper, emotional problem (ie: not having children? I don't know? Economical issues? Whatever) it isn't going to be a happy island. Which doesn't mean they should stop loving each others or break up - it would be stupid, after two seasons and 7 years of unrequited, complicated love. I don't think anyone would like it - wouldn't it feel like a betrayal? The on-and-off couples are not for period drama, and surely not for quality tv IMO, they're like a punch in the face.
And btw, while I do think that season1 was on the whole better conceived than season2, I think the M/M situation was very well dealt with during the season, I actually liked that a lot (especially Mary), and I was not bothered in the least. There are many couples on the show, and they've all had their own romantic journey, the show is also about that.

Why did you say that? What makes you think I wanted them to break up? I want their relationship to be interesting, not a romance novel cliche. That is what I was hinting.
