That night after Elsie told Mr Bates that “We all carry scars. Inside or out.” She remembered her life back on her father’s farm in Argyll and the scar belonging to it. It hadn’t been the biggest farm in the vicinity but her family managed quite well and, thankfully, they always had enough to eat except that one summer when the fields had been to dry. But the starving hadn’t left her scarred. She had been hungry back then but their father had done everything to see his two young daughters and his desperate wife fed as best as he could.

No. That dry summer hadn’t left her wincing and fidgeting for years and still made her anxious. Instead it had been the best summer they have had, when Elsie had just turned fifteen. They had hired a farm hand to keep up with all the work. A young man who had run out of money and desperately needed a place to sleep and eat. His name had been Charles Grigg and he had told her that he wanted to become a great performer - one who filled the biggest stages in London. After work she often spent time talking to him. He showed her how well he could sing in the barn. He also showed her how well he could dance in the barn. He made her do things she did not want to do in the barn.

He left the day afterwards and she prayed in church everyday for one whole month. She did not enter the barn again unless she really had to.

When Griggs did not return she was grateful. He may not have left scars on her body but he had left her broken and sore still. The deep scars on her soul would never fade.
