A month after he settled in a snug cottage Mrs Hughes arrived, bags in hand. "I've resigned."
"You can't move in here!"
"We’re leaving. You’ll show me London.”
"I can't." Why not? "I must tell -" There was no one to tell. "I have to -" There was naught to do. "We're not married."
"Gretna Green, then London," she decided.
"Will we come home?"
"When we choose."
"Give me an hour."
"Half."
He’d missed her this month alone. "Welcome home, Elsie."
