I should keep busy and avoid brooding at all costs. However, I know my nerves will snap should I sit in the servants’ hall for another minute listening to Thomas and Miss O’Brien snipe at each other.
As I near my parlour door, Mr Carson’s head pops out from the butler’s pantry. “Would you like a cup of tea, Mrs Hughes?”
“No,” I say, bowing my head. I’ve already relied on him an excessive amount over the last few weeks. His behaviour before he found out about the lump was not what I expected. His behaviour afterwards was equally surprising (yet not unwelcome) and I’m still uncertain how I feel about both situations.
But I remind myself that I can’t let myself feel anything at the moment; not until I know.
“Mrs Hughes.”
My head shoots up. He’s standing beside me now, holding my arm.
“Mr Carson, I’m just taking a break.”
He ignores me and accompanies me into the parlour, the one place left in the house that ever seems to offer me any sort of privacy.
“Is there something you needed?” I ask stiffly.
“No,” he replies.
Holding my breath, I sit down on the settee, and then, to my surprise, he lowers himself beside me.
“It’s just that I’m waiting--”
“For the doctor,” he finishes. “Yes, I know.”
As I blink, he continues: “I’ll wait with you.”
“I--”
He raises his hand to silence me. “I’ve already requested that Mrs Patmore joins us once the doctor arrives. If you then wish me to leave, I will. But until then, I’ll stay.”
“Mr Carson, you can’t ever be serious.”
“I am, Mrs Hughes. It’s the least I can do.”
I don’t say anything else after that. Neither does he.
We just sit, side by side, and wait. Together.
