(300) word drabble

Even though the library door was solid and soundproof, Cora knew what conversation was occurring behind it.

She also knew that, despite her mother’s endless rhapsodies about their modern way of life, she would be expected to agree to whatever deal was being brokered at this very moment.

She stood and moved to the window. Outside, there was a flurry of activity. This was London at the height of the Season. But what about when she was in residence in Yorkshire? How many visitors would she be receiving then? Other than her prospective mother-in-law; the same woman who considered one couldn’t place the word ‘American’ into a sentence without adding ‘vulgar’.

She wasn’t a fool. She knew Robert only needed two things: money and sons. She could give him one of those things before the ink on the marriage certificate was even dry.

The other... The English were not known for their passion at the best of times, let alone when they felt nothing for the woman involved.

Was her mother’s pursuit of a title enough to make her agree to such a union? She should be ashamed of herself for even contemplating such a loveless marriage.

“Miss Levinson.”

She turned. Robert Crawley had entered the drawing room. Behind him the door to the library was once again open, their respective mothers nowhere in sight.

“I was wondering, Miss Levinson, if I may have a word.”

She hesitated for a long moment. There was no question of what he wanted to discuss. The only question was what her answer would be.

She lowered herself into a chair and watched him as he began to pace.

Yes, she should be ashamed of herself for even contemplating such a loveless marriage. But the truth was, it wouldn’t be completely.

“Yes,” she agreed.
