The first time Thomas saw Major Clarkson and Mrs Hughes exchange a few words, he thought nothing of it.
The second time, he made a mental note.
The third and fourth times, when they were engaged in quiet conversation, he began to scheme.
The fifth time, he tried to eavesdrop. Carson caught him, and told him off.
The sixth time, Thomas saw the major and the housekeeper sharing tea in the kitchen; and surely it was too late for Clarkson to have any reason to be below stairs.
Really, how could they expect him not to spread a few rumors?
