It hurts, sometimes, being with him. To see him smile and laugh, be clever with her, and know that she could have, a lifetime ago, shared the rest of her life with him. When she is with him, she can see that life like it is a half-forgotten memory, a dream.

But though it hurts, it hurts more to be away from him. To worry, to pray. When he comes to her and her heart tightens, it is in equal parts pain and joy. He doesn’t love me. But he trusts me, cares for me.

And it will have to be enough.
