Author: Aussie
Rated: T
(300) word drabble

Quote by Jane Austen, obviously. :)

“Jane?”

She spun around from the bookshelf.

“I was just...”

“Stealing some of my books?”

He was joking, of course, but she still blushed.

“I thought you were in Ripon,” she breathed.

“You wouldn’t have come in here if you’d known I was home?”

“Never!” she said without thinking, realising too late how insulting she sounded. “I mean--”

He chuckled. “No, don’t apologise.”

He took a step closer and she inhaled deeply. He never smelt of sweat or smoke like other men.

“You’re reading all these?”

“They’re for Freddy.”

He hummed and leant down to study the books’ titles. She resisted the urge to touch that one tiny curl on the top of his head.

“Oh dear.” He straightened, bringing one of the novels with him. “He’s planning on reading this?”

She didn’t bother turning to see which book he was holding. There was only the one obviously romantic and feminine novel amongst them.

She closed her eyes and he began to quote a passage.

“Elizabeth was too much embarrassed to say a word. After a short pause, her companion added, ‘you are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”

She whimpered when she felt his finger stroke softly across her cheek.

“Jane, tell me to stop.”

“Please, Robert...”

“Tell me to stop,” he ordered sharply, his lips now following his finger’s path.

“I can’t,” she gasped, pushing at his shoulders and running to the door.

Using every last bit of strength she possessed, she stepped out of the room. However, she knew he would still hear her quiet confession as she did: “Heaven help me, I can’t.”
