[private in intervals of about an hour, first sent to Perry, then sent to Hoffman]

[ The voice coming through is edgy and high-pitched, close to tears or panic, with a hard-breathed whimper whenever she stops speaking. ] It's back for me... cut its face open and it... don't know if it's still out there but... [ A door opens, and immediately slams ( Read more... )

[Hoffman's back is aching. His hand hurts-their blood burns and it's in him or near as he can figure out. It's probably infected. He'd probably die and come back.

But Caesares was safe and he left him to respond to Lua. No tricks, nothing. It was all hands on deck and he could help.

He could help. He was in cop mode. For the first time in months-perhaps years-he felt righteous.]

Where are you.

[ a whine of shock and as it's released, relief ] ...locked myself in the cleaning closet. Can you... please?

[Brisk nod. No time for loyalties or how much she hated him (he didn't understand that, but.) He could grab her, sling her over his shoulder, and go.

He told the old man to get back to the infirmary and promised that he'd bring her there-safe.

I'll be there in 10.]

[It takes him longer then ten. He was breathing heavily and his head was pounding. This was good. This was what won him awards (his blood splattered award that he'd used to beat the head in of the ghostly monster.)

The corridor looked relatively bare, but he kept his hands out until he saw the closet.]

You all right?

[ Through the door, a gasp. Sound grateful, sound surprised someone bothered, a little worried it's safe... she got too scared with Perry but she can take this guy, right? ] They gone?

[Hoffman nods. His hands are at the ready and he's trying-trying to regain the same calm he had long before all of this. That calm he was taught in the academy. During his mother's murder. All of that.

He manages to smile weakly.]

..Everything's all fucked to hell but you're going to be okay.

[He smiles]

Everything's going to be fine. You can come on out.

[ It takes her a minute to unlock the door, and if he listens he can hear her breathe almost too slowly. It's good she already seems afraid. When she finally slips out, she looks like she's been running, but unharmed. ] It...

[ She eyes his hands. ] You did that to them?

[Hoffman hadn't stopped to think about his hands. Looking down, he ran a finger across the bite. It spreads between his third and fourth finger and looks pretty nasty.]

[Hoffman looks her in the eye] Do you have a problem with that?

[He casts an anxious look over his shoulder before turning back to her] we should get ready to go.

[ Her eyes shine when she looks from hands to his face and edges hesitantly towards him. ] No.

[ She walked right past a pack on her way down here. He'll think it's suspicious if they see him and leave her alone. It has to be now. So she looks down as she closes the distance and wraps one arm around his neck, breathing heavily as her head bows into his chest. ] Thank you.

[ He's taller than she expected, so she has to wait until she's recovered herself and has let go before she can reach into her sleeve and drive the knife into the closest spot on his body. With him, she only has one chance, and it has to count. ]

[She was so small...

Hoffman held her for a moment-stunned. He lets her go quickly-flushed.]

...come on. I'm fading fast.

[ It's not enough. He's too warm and she wanted to hurt him, this isn't like practice at all. The spot feels too soft, the angle's wrong, and when she recoils at the feeling and jerks the knife out, blood spattering both of them, it hasn't gone far enough.

And this isn't fair, she realizes, frozen. He thought she might be dying, eaten up by those things, and could have gotten eaten himself. But she knows he might want to kill her, and he thinks he saved her.

It's too much like him. She can't finish it, and she looks at him pleading for him to forgive her instead of killing her. ]

[Hoffman stumbles back. The stress, the pain in his back, his hand. And now that sudden sharp stab in the gut.

...He stares at her, incredulous.]

You stabbed me.

[He sounds almost annoyed. Surprised and annoyed. He puts a hand to his stomach and it comes away red.]

....You stabbed me. Why?

[It's probably the stress that's contributing to it, but he wavers-nearly falling back.]

[ No no no no no she can't let this happen, she doesn't think a wound like that will kill him but he still has to be safe. She has to make it right, and that's something she understands. ]

I have to cause trouble. [ She lets the knife fall to the floor and tries to support him under his arm. ] Can't.

[Hoffman slumps against her and tries to shove her away while doing so. It's an odd move.]

...Stop. [Cause trouble?] Why?

[ She opens her mouth to explain, but nothing comes out. It's too much right now, she'll break down and someone has to take care of this. He's too tangled up in her for her to do anything except press down on his shoulder to tell him to sit down. ] I'll get someone... they'll take care of it.

[His wound...doesn't hurt really compared with everything else.]

Caesares.

[he coughs] I should have expected it.

You can't save everyone.

[ She settles him and quickly sends off a message - "someone's hurt, come here". Not Caesares, she's pretty sure he might see through her, even if she trusts him. She doesn't have anything to stop the bleeding with, so presses the wound closed and her face can't stop apologizing, even though the look's also asking why he'd expect that. Does he know she hates him, and why? ]
