...hi. Been thinking about what that guy just said...

If something happens when people go nuts around here, like [like she's trying the word out] a flood, does it get held against you? I've been hearing people talking about their "twins" and like they turn into someone else, but I've never gotten hit like that, so I don't know ( Read more... )

talking to strangers again, uncomfortable questions, security: public, dammit richie

I know, but I mean it won't be you.

Sorry, I don't think we've meet yet. I'm Martha.

You as well. How are you finding being aboard?

Still getting used to it. People are saying it hasn't been that long. [If it was a man asking her this, she'd put on the "I'm trying to be brave" spin, but Martha? You get the "I'll make it" one.]

It will get easier as time goes on. The strangeness will stop.

But you're not alone here. There will be people to help you. I'll be there if you'd like me to be.

[She's starting to get that there are some people here who just want to help instead of being here because they like it somehow, but she doesn't know Martha well enough to say if she's like that, so won't accept or reject.] Thanks.

You've been here a while, right?

Yes. I've been here over two years now.

[That's the longest she's heard of anyone being here, and Martha doesn't have that undertone of "I don't want to be here" that she's felt with every inmate she's met.] Yeah? Can't be that bad, if you've stayed that long. [She doesn't know how sincere that is, but it's supposed to sound like it is.]

It can be horrible. But there are things that make it worth staying for. People as well.

Wouldn't say it if I didn't. You should know I'm pretty rubbish at lying.

[Actually she doesn't know why she'd know this, but isn't about to question it.] So it's been worth it.
