(Sorry for the lack of November Featured Artist - life happens and all that.)
I've found that trying to find a real Internet presence and buy anything digitally from these guys nearly impossible. They do have some digital songs on MySpace/SnoCap, but I'm protesting that for a real CD. Hopefully that will be rectified after the new year.
ANYWAY, my point is, despite that, I'm still naming them December Featured Artist!
Discovering The District was a total fluke... a group of friends and my mom were out 11/17/07 to see Sirsy's show at The Bitter End, but we were really early and got there just in time to see The District's whole set. Most of the acts I catch accidentally at The Bitter End are hit or miss for me, especially male acts. Often guys who think they can play guitar and sing will, and for some reason they get an act booked. I digress.
So I was hesitant to get in to The District right away; I'll admit. The band is full... at least six guys (or more?!) on the stage and they were were all good-looking, and I kept thinking that it was all for show. But as the set progressed through each song, I was intrigued. You can really hear how each player's part was relevant, and they all played to the fullest energy and excitement they had.
What was interesting about that night is that it was the first show for the new drummer, and at first look, it seemed that he was nervous and was trying to remember the beat. However, I've come to appreciate his stage persona in that he was the drums. Like he didn't want any necessary attention and just wanted the fans to hear the music.
Ron Pope's vocals and lyrics are smooth and seductive, very complementary with the music, and just goodness...
My mom bought their, I'm assuming, first CD, which is much more mellow than what we experienced live. But key songs on there are "Out of Me" and "Didn't Expect You."
So, while I don't have any of their digital music or real CDs to listen to, I've been streaming them like crazy on their MySpace.
You should too! (Especially if you're a fan of Southern rock, which I know MANY of you are!)
